Fullerton vs Santa Ana
SANTA ANA, Calif. (Interstat) — The Fullerton College Hornets delivered a dominant offensive performance to defeat the Santa Ana College Dons 95-71 in a California Community College Athletic Association men’s basketball game Friday night.
The victory extended Fullerton’s winning streak and improved its season record to 23-1, while Santa Ana fell to 18-5. The Hornets also completed a regular-season sweep of the Dons, having won a much closer 60-57 contest on Jan. 14.
From the opening tip, Fullerton established control with a blistering display of efficiency. The Hornets shot 55% from the field, including a remarkable 61% from three-point range, connecting on 14 of 23 attempts. Their offensive rating of 134.8 points per 100 possessions underscored a nearly flawless execution against a Santa Ana team that struggled to find its rhythm, shooting 44% overall and just 29% from beyond the arc.
The most pivotal stretch of the game came late in the first half, turning a competitive contest into a commanding lead for the visitors. Leading 43-39 with under six minutes remaining in the second quarter, Fullerton unleashed a decisive 19-3 run that broke the game open. The surge was fueled by the hot hand of Jaqari Miles, who was named the game’s top star. Miles scored 11 points during the run, including three three-pointers, showcasing the explosive scoring ability that led to his team-high 28 points in just 19 minutes of play.
Santa Ana, led by Cameron Swist’s 19 points and Aaron De Santiago’s 17 points, could not mount a response. The Dons were held to an offensive rating of 97.8 and were outrebounded 39-26 by a more physical Fullerton squad. Yoda Oke anchored the Hornets on the glass with nine rebounds.
Donovan Pitts provided crucial support for Fullerton with 22 points, while Trey Thompson and MJ Smith added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Smith also contributed six rebounds and three blocks. Christien Jimenez led Santa Ana with five assists.
The Hornets’ defensive pressure, resulting in seven steals and six blocks, compounded Santa Ana’s issues and created transition opportunities that fueled their efficient offense. Despite committing 13 turnovers to Santa Ana’s 10, Fullerton’s advantages in shooting, rebounding and playmaking proved insurmountable.
The result aligned with pregame analytics, as Interstat’s ELO system had projected Fullerton with a 90.10 percent probability to win.
Fullerton next hosts Cypress on Tuesday, Feb. 10. Santa Ana looks to rebound on the road at Saddleback the same evening.
