Preview: Contra Costa Comets at Mendocino Eagles

UKIAH, Calif. (Interstat) — The Contra Costa College Comets visit the Mendocino College Eagles on Wednesday night in a California Community College men’s basketball matchup featuring teams heading in opposite directions.

The Comets (12-10) enter with a winning record and sit in the middle of the conference standings, but have lost two straight games. They fell 72-61 at Merritt last Friday after an 85-88 overtime loss at Los Medanos on Jan. 28. Prior to that skid, Contra Costa had won three of four, including a decisive 90-72 victory over these same Eagles on Jan. 6 in San Pablo.

Mendocino (7-16) is near the bottom of the standings but is coming off one of its best performances of the season, a 70-61 road win at Alameda last Friday. That victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Eagles, which included a 66-100 home loss to Yuba on Jan. 28.

The Jan. 6 meeting will loom large in the scouting report. In that game, the Comets’ offense proved too potent for the Eagles’ defense. Contra Costa will look to reignite that high-scoring form after being held to 61 points in its last outing.

For Mendocino, protecting its home court and building momentum from the Alameda win is the priority. The Eagles’ season has been marked by inconsistency, with the win over Alameda and an 85-60 victory over Solano on Jan. 23 highlighting their potential, but lopsided losses revealing their struggles.

Key for Contra Costa will be bouncing back from a poor shooting performance against Merritt. For Mendocino, containing the Comets’ offensive attack, which averaged 88 points in its two wins prior to the recent losses, is essential.

This is the second of two scheduled regular-season meetings between the teams. A Mendocino win would split the season series and provide a significant confidence boost. A Contra Costa victory would solidify its position above .500 and complete the sweep.

Tip-off is set for Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026, at Mendocino College. The Comets’ next game is at home Friday against Solano. The Eagles host Napa Valley on Friday.
