San Diego Mesa vs San Diego Miramar
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Two San Diego men’s junior college basketball teams with identical overall records but divergent recent paths will meet Wednesday when the San Diego Mesa Olympians visit the San Diego Miramar Jets.
The Pacific Coast Athletic Conference matchup at Miramar College tips off at 7 p.m. on Feb. 4.
Both teams enter with 9-win seasons, but the Jets (9-11) have shown more consistency within conference play. The Olympians (9-14) are looking to halt a three-game skid, including a 91-77 home loss to Palomar on Jan. 30 and a 90-60 defeat at San Diego City on Jan. 28.
Miramar also seeks a rebound after a 77-56 loss at Grossmont on Jan. 30. The Jets will rely on forward Jaden Merritt, who recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds in that contest.
For Mesa, guard Michael Contreras is a key figure. He contributed 12 points and four assists in 29 minutes against San Diego City last week.
The Jets won the season’s first head-to-head meeting decisively, 76-55, at Mesa on Jan. 7. In that game, Miramar’s defense stifled the Olympians, holding them to 55 points, a season-low for Mesa in conference action.
Since that loss, Mesa’s form has been uneven, mixing narrow wins like a 58-54 victory over MiraCosta with several double-digit losses. Miramar has been more competitive in its defeats and boasts a conference win over Palomar, 92-87, on Jan. 9.
With the conference schedule reaching its midpoint, both teams view this as a pivotal game for momentum. A win for Miramar would solidify its standing, while Mesa aims to split the season series and climb the table.
Following this game, Mesa will host Imperial Valley on Feb. 6, while Miramar travels to face Palomar the same night.
