Grossmont vs MiraCosta
Preview: Grossmont Griffins at MiraCosta Spartans
OCEANSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) — The MiraCosta Spartans will look to complete a regular-season sweep when they host the Grossmont Griffins in a California Community College men’s basketball matchup Wednesday night.
The Spartans (9-12) dominated the first meeting, winning 101-83 at Grossmont on Jan. 7. MiraCosta enters having snapped a four-game skid with an 88-65 road win at Imperial Valley on Jan. 30.
Grossmont (6-14) arrives with momentum from a 77-56 home victory over San Diego Miramar last Friday. The Griffins have shown recent improvement, winning two of their last four contests.
A key matchup will feature two of the conference’s top performers. Grossmont guard Lorenzo Martinez is coming off a standout 20-point, 7-rebound, 5-assist effort in the win over Miramar. Over his last five games, Martinez is averaging 13.8 points and 5.6 assists.
For MiraCosta, forward Logan Mason has been a force on the boards. He recorded a massive 17-point, 18-rebound double-double in a loss to Cuyamaca on Jan. 28, and followed with 17 points and 11 rebounds at San Diego Mesa. Mason was efficient in limited minutes in the first matchup against Grossmont, scoring 9 points in just 10 minutes of play.
The Spartans’ offense, which eclipsed 100 points in the January win, will test a Grossmont defense that has been inconsistent. The Griffins, however, have demonstrated a higher ceiling recently, including a 110-point outing against Imperial Valley in December.
With both teams looking to build winning streaks and improve their positioning before the next phase of conference play, this rematch offers Grossmont a chance for redemption and MiraCosta an opportunity to solidify its earlier dominance.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST at MiraCosta College.
