Reedley vs Sequoias
VISALIA, Calif. (Interstat) — The Reedley Tigers will seek to snap a three-game skid and avenge a recent loss when they visit the state-ranked Sequoias Giants in a California community college men’s basketball matchup Wednesday night.
The Giants (16-6), coming off a dominant 98-69 road win over Coalinga, have established themselves as a defensive powerhouse in conference play. They handily defeated the Tigers (11-11) 70-53 in Reedley just over three weeks ago on Jan. 10. In that game, Sequoias held Reedley to 32% shooting from the field.
Reedley’s hopes will lean heavily on sophomore guard CJ Kornegay Jr., who has been a consistent offensive bright spot. Kornegay scored a team-high 22 points in the first meeting against Sequoias and is averaging 12.6 points over his last eight games. He is coming off a 16-point performance in a loss to Lemoore this past Saturday.
However, containing Sequoias’ high-powered attack, which has averaged 86 points in its last three wins, will be the primary challenge. Giants’ standout Kareem Barnett is a focal point, fresh off a 29-point, 7-rebound outing against Coalinga. Barnett’s backcourt mate, Mason Dorsey, nearly recorded a triple-double in that contest with 8 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists.
The Tigers have struggled offensively during their losing streak, failing to reach 70 points in any of the three losses. Beyond Kornegay, production has been inconsistent. Kevin Chambers, who had 12 points and 5 assists against Lemoore, will need to provide supplementary scoring.
Sequoias has won five of its last six games and boasts a perfect 9-0 record at home this season. A win would solidify their position atop the conference standings. For Reedley, a .500 team searching for momentum, pulling off a road upset against the Giants would mark a signature victory and crucial turnaround as the season enters its final stretch.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Porter Field House.
