Modesto vs Sierra

Top California Junior College Teams Set for Showdown

ROCKLIN, Calif. (Interstat) — A pivotal California Community College Athletic Association men’s basketball matchup is set for Tuesday when the Modesto Pirates visit the Sierra Wolverines.

The Pirates (19-2), one of the state’s top teams, bring a potent offense to town, averaging 92 points in their last three contests. They are coming off a dominant 105-79 victory over Sacramento City on Jan. 30. Their only two losses this season came against Cosumnes River, including a 71-61 defeat on Jan. 27.

The Wolverines (17-4) have won four straight, most recently a 92-82 win over American River on Jan. 30. Sierra has shown resilience in close games, edging Diablo Valley 73-70 and Cosumnes River 76-75 during its current streak.

This contest is a rematch of a Jan. 6 thriller, which Modesto won 92-87 at home. In that game, the Pirates’ high-scoring attack narrowly outlasted Sierra.

The matchup features two of the region’s most efficient offenses. Modesto has scored 80 or more points in 14 games this season, while Sierra has reached the 90-point mark nine times.

For Modesto, a win would solidify its position atop the conference and avenge one of its two losses from late December. Sierra seeks to protect its home court and close the gap in the standings, potentially swinging the conference title race.

Following this game, Modesto hosts San Joaquin Delta on Friday. Sierra travels to Folsom Lake on Friday.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST at Sierra College.
