Sequoias vs Coalinga

COALINGA, Calif. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in fortunes will be on display Saturday when the state-ranked Sequoias Giants visit the struggling Coalinga Falcons in a California community college men’s basketball matchup.

The Giants (15-6) enter riding high in the conference standings, while the Falcons (2-19) seek to halt a prolonged slump. The teams met just over three weeks ago, with Sequoias delivering a 97-59 rout at home on Jan. 7.

Sequoias aims to rebound from a narrow 76-73 road loss to Columbia on Wednesday, a game in which they let a late lead slip away. Despite the defeat, forward Cameron Kelly continued his dominant season, posting 21 points and 11 rebounds. Kelly has been a consistent force, averaging 18.6 points and 8.2 rebounds over his last five games. He recorded a triple-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in the earlier win over Coalinga.

The Giants’ defense has been a hallmark, holding opponents to 53 points or fewer in three of their last four wins. Their recent results include a 68-35 throttling of Porterville and an 87-53 victory over Fresno City.

Coalinga, meanwhile, is mired in a 10-game losing streak, most recently a 79-51 home loss to Lemoore on Wednesday. The Falcons have struggled on both ends, allowing an average of 80.2 points per game during their skid. Forward Josiah Perez-Little will be a key for Coalinga; he grabbed nine rebounds in the first meeting against Sequoias.

Despite the lopsided records and previous result, Interstat’s game simulator projects an improbable 100-100 tie, suggesting potential for a high-scoring affair.

Tipoff is set for Saturday, Jan. 31, at Coalinga’s gym. Sequoias looks to maintain its playoff positioning, while Coalinga searches for a stunning upset to salvage its season.
