Cosumnes River vs Modesto
Top-20 JUCO Powers Collide as Modesto Hosts Cosumnes River
MODESTO, Calif. (Interstat) — A marquee men’s junior college basketball matchup with state title implications is set for Tuesday when Modesto hosts Cosumnes River in a California Community College Athletic Association showdown.
The Modesto Pirates (18-1), whose lone loss this season came at the hands of Cosumnes River, will seek revenge on their home floor. The Cosumnes River Hawks (15-4) arrive with confidence, having dominated the previous meeting 61-40 on Dec. 30. That game stands as a stark outlier in Modesto’s otherwise dominant season.
Since that defeat, the Pirates have been relentless, winning eight straight games by an average margin of 19.5 points. Their most recent outing was an 83-59 road victory at Folsom Lake on Jan. 23.
Cosumnes River, however, is also riding high, coming off a spectacular 123-81 rout of Sacramento City on Jan. 23. The Hawks’ four losses have all been by narrow margins, including two one-point defeats in January. Their recent form includes a 77-62 win over Diablo Valley on Jan. 13, where forward Aalijah Gillyard posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Gillyard, a consistent force on the glass, has recorded double-digit rebounds in two of his last three contests.
The game features a clash of strengths. Modesto’s high-powered offense, which has scored 80 or more points in 12 games, will be tested by a Cosumnes River defense that held them to a season-low 40 points last month. The Hawks have shown a pattern of strong defensive performances, holding opponents under 65 points in nine of their wins.
Tuesday’s contest is the first of two scheduled meetings between the powers this season and could heavily influence conference standings and postseason seeding. The rematch is slated for Feb. 20 at Cosumnes River.
Following this matchup, Modesto will host Sacramento City on Jan. 30, while Cosumnes River returns home to face Folsom Lake on the same date.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. PST at Modesto Junior College.
