Santa Monica vs Canyons
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (Interstat) — The Canyons Cougars, riding a two-game winning streak, will host the struggling Santa Monica Corsairs in a California community college men’s basketball matchup on Saturday, Jan. 24.
The Cougars (11-7) enter following a decisive 92-73 victory over West Los Angeles on Wednesday. Forward Craig Irons dominated that contest, posting a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds. Irons has been a consistent force on the glass, averaging 11.3 rebounds over his last four games. Canyons has found its rhythm offensively, averaging 90.5 points during its current streak.
Santa Monica (5-14) aims to halt a three-game skid, most recently falling 81-76 to Antelope Valley on Wednesday. In that loss, guard Sage Church erupted for a season-high 32 points. Church has been the Corsairs’ primary offensive threat, averaging 15.3 points per game over his last five outings. Support came from Ka’mari Johnson (16 points, 7 rebounds) and Anthony Minoletti, who dished out 8 assists.
The Corsairs’ season has been marked by defensive struggles, including a 147-85 road loss to Citrus on Jan. 17. They will need to contain a balanced Canyons attack that features Donovan Cornelius (15 points vs. West L.A.) and Dwayne Boston Jr. (15 points, 4 assists).
This game marks the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams, with a rematch scheduled in Santa Monica on Feb. 18. Canyons will look to solidify its winning record, while Santa Monica seeks a pivotal road victory to turn its season around.
Tip-off is set for Saturday at Cougar Cage.
