Solano vs Merritt
Preview: Solano Falcons at Merritt Thunderbirds
OAKLAND, Calif. (Interstat) — The Merritt College Thunderbirds will look to move above .500 in conference play when they host the struggling Solano College Falcons in a California Community College men’s basketball matchup Wednesday night.
The Thunderbirds (9-10 overall) enter with momentum from an 83-77 road victory over Mendocino on Friday. That win snapped a brief two-game skid for Merritt, which has shown resilience at home this season, including a notable 88-84 win over Los Medanos on Jan. 10.
Conversely, the Falcons (3-15) are mired in a seven-game losing streak. Solano is coming off an 89-67 home loss to Los Medanos on Friday, a game in which they allowed 50 second-half points. Defense has been a season-long issue; the Falcons have surrendered 80 or more points in 11 of their 15 losses.
A player to watch for Solano is forward Tom Schall. He is coming off one of his best performances of the season, posting 12 points and seven rebounds in 23 minutes against Los Medanos. His production will be crucial for a Falcons offense that has been held under 60 points in eight games this season.
In the Jan. 16 loss, Solano’s Eric Lacy led all scorers with 18 points, while Nicko Ignacio added 17 points and four assists. Generating consistent scoring beyond that trio remains a challenge.
For Merritt, maintaining their recent offensive efficiency will be key. The Thunderbirds have scored 83 or more points in three of their last five outings. They will be heavily favored against a Solano squad that has lost its road games by an average margin of 26.2 points.
This game represents a critical opportunity for Merritt to solidify its standing before a tough stretch against conference contenders. For Solano, it is a chance to find a spark and halt a prolonged slide as the season’s second half unfolds.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Merritt College Gymnasium.
