De Anza vs San Mateo
Preview: De Anza at San Mateo Men’s Basketball
SAN MATEO, Calif. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in momentum and standings will be on display Wednesday night when the surging San Mateo Bulldogs host the struggling De Anza Mountain Lions in a California Community College men’s basketball matchup.
The Bulldogs (14-4 overall) enter as one of the region’s top teams, despite coming off a rare lopsided loss, 80-54 at San Francisco on Jan. 16. That defeat snapped a three-game winning streak for San Mateo, which had previously shown a knack for close victories, including overtime wins against Skyline and Ohlone earlier this month. Their defense has been a consistent strength, holding opponents under 70 points in 12 of their 18 games.
Conversely, the Mountain Lions (8-10) have weathered an inconsistent season but carry a flicker of positive momentum after a narrow 74-72 road win at Ohlone last Friday. That victory, fueled by a last-second score, halted a three-game skid for De Anza and showcased their resilience following an overtime win against Canada College just two days prior. However, defensive consistency remains a concern; they have allowed 82 or more points in six of their ten losses.
This contest pits San Mateo’s structured defense against a De Anza offense that can be potent but erratic. The Mountain Lions average approximately 78 points per game but have been held under 75 in half of their contests. They will need to solve a Bulldog defense that has proven difficult to penetrate at home.
The teams’ upcoming schedules add urgency. This game kicks off a critical stretch for both in conference play. San Mateo looks to rebound and protect its home court before a rematch with Las Positas on Friday. De Anza aims to build its first sustained winning streak of the new year before hosting Chabot on Friday.
Historically, junior college basketball in the region is defined by such contrasts, where a single game can pivot a season. For San Mateo, it’s a chance to reassert dominance. For De Anza, it’s an opportunity to prove its recent win was a turning point, not an anomaly.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at San Mateo’s home court. The teams will meet again in Cupertino on Feb. 13.
