Cabrillo vs San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Interstat) — A surging San Jose Jaguars squad will look to protect its home court against a hot Cabrillo Seahawks team when the two men’s junior college basketball programs meet Wednesday in a key California contest.

The Jaguars (15-5), winners of six straight, host the Seahawks (10-6) at 7 p.m. on Jan. 21. San Jose sits near the top of the conference standings, while Cabrillo aims to build momentum from a dominant offensive performance last time out.

San Jose’s streak is built on stifling defense, having held its last three opponents to 74 points or fewer. In its latest victory, San Jose limited Monterey Peninsula to 51 points in a 60-51 road win on Jan. 16. Offensive balance has been a hallmark, with five players scoring in double figures during an 85-74 win over Foothill on Jan. 14.

Cabrillo, however, arrives with significant firepower. The Seahawks are coming off a 105-65 rout of Gavilan on Jan. 16, showcasing an explosive scoring touch. That victory marked their third win in their last four games, with the only recent blemish a 78-72 loss to Skyline on Dec. 31.

The matchup features a contrast in recent trajectories. The Jaguars have been consistently strong since early December, with their only loss in the past nine games a narrow 57-52 defeat at Modesto on Dec. 5. Their resume includes a double-overtime win over Sequoias and a decisive 97-40 victory over Gavilan.

Cabrillo’s season has been more volatile, with notable road wins at Monterey Peninsula and Canada (Calif.) mixed with double-digit losses to Santa Rosa and Chabot. The Seahawks’ ability to score in transition will be tested by San Jose’s disciplined defensive scheme.

This game is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams. They are scheduled to play again at Cabrillo on Feb. 13.

Following Wednesday’s contest, San Jose will travel to face Hartnell on Jan. 28. Cabrillo’s next game is at home against West Valley on Jan. 23.
