Modesto vs Diablo Valley
Top-Ranked Modesto Pirates Visit Diablo Valley Vikings in Key California JUCO Clash
PLEASANT HILL, Calif. (Interstat) — The state’s top-ranked junior college men’s basketball team hits the road Tuesday night as the Modesto Pirates, boasting a formidable 16-1 record, face the Diablo Valley Vikings at Diablo Valley College.
The matchup pits the surging Pirates, whose only loss this season came against Cosumnes River on Dec. 30, against a .500 Vikings squad (8-8) seeking a statement victory to solidify its conference standing. Modesto enters on a five-game winning streak, most recently defeating Santa Rosa 74-60 at home last Friday.
Diablo Valley is coming off an impressive 90-73 road victory over San Joaquin Delta on Jan. 16, which snapped a two-game skid. The Vikings will look to sophomore guard Antoine Morgan to provide a scoring spark. Morgan is coming off a season-high 15-point performance in 23 minutes in the loss to Cosumnes River on Jan. 13.
Modesto’s dominance this season has been built on consistent offense and stout defense, averaging 78.6 points per game while holding opponents to an average of 68.1. Their current streak includes decisive wins over American River (87-65) and a road victory at San Joaquin Delta (80-67).
The Vikings have shown flashes of strong play, including a 108-point outburst against American River in December, but have struggled with consistency. Protecting their home court against the state’s top team presents their toughest challenge of the conference schedule to date.
Tuesday’s contest is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams. They are scheduled to meet again in Modesto on Feb. 20.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. PST at Diablo Valley College. The game will be a key test for Modesto’s championship aspirations and a crucial opportunity for Diablo Valley to alter the trajectory of its season.
