Cosumnes River vs Sierra
ROCKLIN, Calif. (Interstat) — A pivotal early-season California Community College men’s basketball clash is set for Tuesday when the Cosumnes River Hawks visit the Sierra Wolverines.
Both teams enter with nearly identical records and championship aspirations. Cosumnes River (14-3) has won five of its last six, including a 77-62 victory over Diablo Valley last Tuesday. Sierra (14-4) is riding a three-game winning streak, most recently edging Sacramento City 93-90 last Friday.
The matchup features two of the region’s top teams and could have significant implications for conference standings. The Hawks are led by forward Aalijah Gillyard, who is coming off a dominant 18-point, 11-rebound double-double against Diablo Valley. His frontcourt presence will be critical against a deep Sierra squad.
In their last outing, Cosumnes River showcased a balanced attack. Alongside Gillyard, Mason Marsh scored a team-high 21 points and Kainoa Marasco added 11. The Hawks’ defense has been a strength, holding opponents to 52 and 62 points in their last two wins.
Sierra, however, presents a formidable offensive challenge. The Wolverines have scored 93, 100 and 85 points in their last three victories, demonstrating a potent, high-scoring attack. Their ability to win close games, as shown in the narrow win over Sacramento City, adds to their resilience.
A key battle will be inside, where Gillyard’s rebounding for Cosumnes River will be tested by Sierra’s physical play. The Wolverines’ recent results suggest a team capable of winning a shootout, while the Hawks have relied on consistent defensive pressure.
This contest is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams, with the rematch scheduled for Feb. 20 at Cosumnes River. Tuesday’s winner will gain an early advantage in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive conference race.
Tip-off is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026, at Sierra College.
