Santa Monica vs Citrus

GLENDORA, Calif. (Interstat) — The Citrus College men’s basketball team delivered an offensive clinic and a defensive masterclass Saturday, overwhelming Santa Monica College 147-85 in a California Community College Athletic Association game.

The Owls, now 16-1, left no doubt from the opening tip, exploding for 79 points in the first quarter alone to build a 79-40 lead. They never relented, adding 68 more in the second quarter. The Corsairs fell to 5-13.

The most decisive phase of the game was its chaotic and lopsided opening minutes. Citrus established immediate and overwhelming control through relentless defensive pressure, forcing Santa Monica into a series of rushed and unsuccessful shots while capitalizing on the other end. The Owls’ full-court pressure generated a staggering 29 steals, leading to 34 Santa Monica turnovers, which Citrus converted into a torrent of easy transition baskets. This defensive havoc directly fueled the historic first-quarter outburst that put the game out of reach before it was halfway through the opening period.

Leo Ricketts led the onslaught for Citrus, scoring 28 points in just 24 minutes, including six 3-pointers. He was one of seven Owls to score in double figures in a showcase of depth and efficiency. JJ Sanchez orchestrated the offense with 14 assists, while Rockwell Reynolds added 18 points and seven rebounds. Mikal Sims provided a huge spark off the bench with 20 points in only nine minutes.

For Santa Monica, Jerrell McCready scored a team-high 30 points, but the Corsairs struggled to find any consistent rhythm against the Citrus defense. Sage Church added 13 points.

As a team, Citrus shot 63.2% from the field and 50% from 3-point range. Their offensive rating of 150.3 points per 100 possessions underscored an exceptionally efficient performance. Santa Monica shot 45.8% from the field but was hampered by 21 turnovers in the first quarter and poor free-throw shooting, making only 9 of 21 attempts.

Citrus next hosts Bakersfield on Wednesday. Santa Monica returns home to face Antelope Valley, also on Wednesday.
