San Bernardino Valley vs Mount San Jacinto
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (Interstat) — A pivotal early-season California community college men’s basketball matchup awaits Saturday when the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines visit the Mount San Jacinto Eagles, with both teams carrying identical 11-5 records into the contest.
The 3 p.m. tipoff at Mount San Jacinto College will feature two of the region’s top offensive talents. The Wolverines are led by Duante Murphy, who is coming off a dominant performance in a 112-73 rout of Desert on Jan. 7. Murphy scored 29 points with six rebounds and five assists in just 20 minutes of action.
For the Eagles, forward Adrian Mosley has been on a tear, averaging 29 points and 10.7 rebounds over his last three games. He posted a 32-point, 10-rebound double-double in the team’s 81-68 win over Barstow on Jan. 7 and a 24-point, 12-rebound effort in a 96-91 road win at Desert on Jan. 3.
Both teams enter on winning streaks. San Bernardino Valley has won three straight, including decisive victories over Desert, Copper Mountain (97-70) and Chaffey (86-70). Mount San Jacinto has won its last two, following a two-game skid against Fullerton and Copper Mountain in mid-December.
The matchup will be the first of two regular-season meetings between the Inland Empire rivals. They will meet again in San Bernardino on Wednesday, Feb. 11.
A look at the recent results reveals contrasting paths. The Wolverines’ offense has exploded, averaging 98.3 points during their three-game win streak. The Eagles have shown resilience in close games, with their last two wins coming by single-digit margins.
Beyond the star power, San Bernardino Valley received balanced contributions in its last outing from Jaison Joyce (eight points, eight rebounds) and Lincoln Liggins (10 points, eight rebounds). Mount San Jacinto’s Joseph Boddie and Kory Dodson provided key support behind Mosley against Barstow.
Saturday’s winner will gain an early advantage in the conference standings and bragging rights in a rivalry that will be renewed next month.
