Preview: Irvine Valley at Saddleback in Key California JUCO Men’s Basketball Clash

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. (Interstat) — A pivotal early conference matchup is set for Friday when the Irvine Valley Lasers visit the Saddleback Bobcats in a California Community College men’s basketball game.

Both teams enter with identical 9-4 overall records, though Saddleback sits at 9-5. The contest marks the Orange Empire Conference opener for both squads and could provide an early tiebreaker in the standings.

Irvine Valley arrives with momentum from a 62-48 home victory over Los Angeles Valley on Dec. 30. The Lasers have won three of their last four, with their only loss in that stretch coming on the road against a strong Mount San Antonio team.

A key player for the Lasers is forward Matt Mowers, who is coming off an efficient 18-point, 8-rebound performance in just 24 minutes against LA Valley. In his previous game at Mt. SAC, Mowers logged 31 minutes, scoring 14 points and grabbing 7 rebounds. His consistent production inside will be crucial against Saddleback’s frontcourt.

The Bobcats, however, are battle-tested in close games. Saddleback’s most recent result was an 81-76 overtime road win at East Los Angeles on Dec. 19. In that victory, Charlie Stallings led the way with 25 points and 7 rebounds, while Mark Reichner added 18 points. The Bobcats have played in three overtime games already this season, winning two of them.

Saddleback’s resilience at home, where they are 3-2 this season, will be tested by an Irvine Valley team that is 5-3 on the road. The Lasers have shown they can win away from home, posting decisive victories at Monterey Peninsula and Desert earlier this season.

The game tips off at 7 p.m. at Saddleback College. General admission tickets are $10, with discounted $8 tickets available for children ages 6-12, seniors 60+, and military with ID. Parking is $5.

This matchup is the first of a home-and-home series between the rivals, who will meet again at Irvine Valley on Wednesday, Feb. 4.
