Northeast Mississippi vs East Mississippi
SCOOBA, Miss. (Interstat) — In a high-octane, back-and-forth affair, the Northeast Mississippi Tigers edged the East Mississippi Lions 87-83 in a men’s junior college basketball game Monday night.
The contest, played before a home crowd at East Mississippi, was defined by a blistering first-half scoring pace and a tense final minute, with the Tigers holding on for the narrow road victory. The win improved Northeast Mississippi to 12-10 on the season, while East Mississippi fell to 10-14.
The game’s most critical sequence unfolded in the final 20 seconds. Clinging to a two-point lead after East Mississippi’s Jayden Tatum hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 85-83, Northeast Mississippi’s Javion Stephen was fouled with 17 seconds remaining. Stephen, who finished with 18 points and five assists, calmly sank both free throws to extend the lead back to four. The Lions had two chances to answer, but Tatum missed consecutive 3-point attempts in the closing seconds, sealing the outcome for the Tigers.
The entire second half was a response to a dominant opening period by the visitors. Northeast Mississippi raced out to a 47-point first quarter, establishing an 11-point lead. However, the Lions, led by a spectacular performance from Maurice Henderson, mounted a relentless comeback. Henderson scored 27 points, including 11 in the second quarter, and added eight rebounds and five assists to spearhead the East Mississippi offense. His backcourt mate, Jace O’Neal, provided 17 points and five assists, helping the Lions outscore the Tigers 47-40 after halftime to turn the game into a nail-biter.
Despite the Lions’ surge, Northeast Mississippi’s balanced attack and efficiency at the free-throw line proved decisive. Ezekiel Udozorh came off the bench to score a team-high 19 points, many on strong interior plays, while Michael Johnson added 15. The Tigers also received significant contributions from Jalen Chandler, who had 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks, and Tayler Berryhill, who dished out six assists.
The game was a statistical anomaly from the start, with both teams combining for 83 points in the first quarter alone. Northeast Mississippi’s early explosion set the tone, but East Mississippi’s resilience, particularly from Henderson, ensured the game would be decided in the final possessions. In the end, the Tigers made the necessary plays in the closing moments to secure the victory.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, East Mississippi entered the game with a 54 percent probability to win, making the Tigers’ victory a slight upset. For Northeast Mississippi, the win provided momentum following a recent loss to Mississippi Gulf Coast. For East Mississippi, it marked another close defeat in a season featuring several narrow losses, including an overtime thriller against Hinds earlier in February.
