Cochise vs Yavapai
PRESCOTT, Ariz. (Interstat) — The Cochise Apaches visit the Yavapai Roughriders on Saturday in a men’s junior college basketball matchup featuring two teams heading in opposite directions.
Cochise (14-10) enters the contest looking to rebound from a decisive 83-64 road loss to Central Arizona on Wednesday. Prior to that, the Apaches had won four of their previous five games. Yavapai (5-16) seeks to end a four-game skid, most recently a 103-80 home loss to Arizona Western on Wednesday.
The Apaches will rely on guard Davon Jones, who has been a consistent scoring threat. He averages 17.1 points over his last eight games, including a 25-point performance in a win over Eastern Arizona on Feb. 21. Jones scored 13 points in Cochise’s 79-60 victory at Yavapai on Feb. 11.
The Roughriders counter with forward Jason Parent, who is coming off a career-high 33-point, eight-rebound effort in the loss to Arizona Western. Parent also posted 23 points and nine rebounds in the Feb. 11 loss to Cochise, demonstrating his capability as a primary offensive option.
This will be the third meeting this season between the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference foes. Cochise won both prior matchups, 83-80 at home on Jan. 24 and 79-60 in Prescott on Feb. 11. The Apaches have won five straight in the series.
Cochise holds a distinct advantage in the standings and recent form, but Yavapai will look to leverage home court at Walraven Gymnasium and a standout performance from Parent to spring an upset. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. MST on Saturday, Feb. 28.
A Cochise win would solidify its position in the conference playoff race, while a Yavapai victory would provide a crucial boost in a difficult season.
