McCook vs Trinidad State
TRINIDAD, Colo. (Interstat) — The McCook Indians snapped a two-game skid and moved above .500 in men’s junior college basketball with a decisive 103-84 road victory over the Trinidad State Trojans on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
The game was effectively decided by a dominant second-quarter surge from McCook, which turned a competitive contest into a lopsided affair. After a high-scoring first quarter that saw Trinidad State hold a narrow 49-43 lead, the Indians locked down defensively and executed with ruthless efficiency after the break. McCook outscored the Trojans 60-35 in the second quarter, a 25-point swing that showcased their superior ball movement and ability to force mistakes.
The most important part of the game was McCook’s transformative defensive pressure and offensive explosion to open the second quarter. After surrendering 49 points in the first, the Indians began the second period with a 12-2 run, fueled by turnovers and transition opportunities. Vladimir Brkovic opened the frame with a steal and a layup, setting the tone. McCook forced five Trinidad State turnovers in the quarter’s first five minutes, converting them into easy baskets and free throws. This stretch broke the game open, erasing the Trojans’ lead and establishing a double-digit advantage that would only grow, as McCook’s offense found a rhythm that Trinidad State could not match.
Nate Coley led McCook with a stellar all-around performance, scoring 27 points, grabbing eight rebounds, and dishing out eight assists. He was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line, many of which came during the critical second-quarter run. Djibril Diawara led all scorers with 29 points, including six three-pointers. Vladimir Brkovic added 23 points and eight rebounds for the Indians.
Demorae Pritchett led Trinidad State with 21 points, scoring 15 from the free-throw line. Donavahan Cain added 11 points for the Trojans.
Statistically, McCook’s victory was built on superior ball security and distribution. The Indians committed only seven turnovers while forcing 16 from Trinidad State. McCook also tallied 10 assists to just three for the Trojans, highlighting a stark difference in offensive cohesion. While both teams shot efficiently from the field, McCook’s significant edge in three-pointers made, 12 to 10, and free-throw percentage, 93.8% to 88.9%, provided the margin.
The win improves McCook’s overall record to 15-12, while Trinidad State falls to 14-16. The result avenged a loss for McCook the previous night and continued a season-series sweep, having also defeated Trinidad State 121-96 at home on January 17.
Interstat’s ELO system had projected Trinidad State with a 61% probability to win the contest, making McCook’s comprehensive performance a notable upset based on those metrics. The Indians’ ability to dominate the second quarter on both ends of the floor proved the decisive factor in overcoming that projection and securing the road victory.
