Utah State Eastern vs Southern Idaho

Eagles Clash in Junior College Showdown Thursday

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (Interstat) — A high-stakes men’s junior college basketball matchup between two of the region’s top teams is set for Thursday when the Utah State Eastern Eagles visit the Southern Idaho Eagles.

Southern Idaho (22-2), boasting one of the nation’s premier records, will look to defend its home court and complete a regular-season sweep of its conference rival. Utah State Eastern (19-7) aims to avenge two earlier losses and bolster its postseason resume.

The teams share a nickname but have followed divergent paths this season. Southern Idaho has been dominant, with its only setbacks coming on the road at Snow (83-77 on Jan. 31) and at North Idaho (81-77 on Feb. 21). They have otherwise rolled through their schedule, including two decisive wins over Utah State Eastern: an 84-62 home victory on Jan. 17 and a 78-74 road win on Jan. 29.

Utah State Eastern enters having won four of its last five, including a 77-68 victory over Salt Lake on Saturday. In that game, guard Ike Palmer scored 26 points, continuing a strong stretch. Palmer, a key player to watch, averaged 17.1 points over his last seven games and dropped 19 points in the narrow Jan. 29 loss to Southern Idaho.

Southern Idaho counters with its own standout in guard Ace Reiser. He poured in 26 points in the recent win at North Idaho and was instrumental in the Jan. 29 win over Utah State Eastern, playing all 40 minutes and contributing 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.

The game features a contrast in momentum. Southern Idaho has proven resilient in close games, escaping with a 78-76 win at Colorado Northwestern on Feb. 12. Utah State Eastern has shown vulnerability on the road, including an 84-64 loss at Snow on Feb. 12, but also possesses road wins like a 79-68 overtime victory at Salt Lake.

Thursday’s contest is the final regular-season meeting between the Eagles squads. A Utah State Eastern win would shake up the conference standings and provide a massive confidence boost ahead of the postseason. A Southern Idaho victory would solidify its top ranking and extend its home-court dominance.

Following this game, Utah State Eastern travels to face North Idaho on Saturday, Feb. 28. Southern Idaho will host Snow the same day.
