Northwest vs Casper

Preview: Northwest Trappers at Casper Thunderbirds

CASPER, Wyo. (Interstat) — The Northwest College Trappers and Casper College Thunderbirds will meet for the second time this season in a Region IX North men’s junior college basketball matchup Saturday.

The game tips off at 4 p.m. local time at the Swede Erickson Thunderbird Gym.

Northwest (12-10) enters with a narrow edge in the standings and seeks a regular-season sweep after defeating Casper 77-67 in Powell on Jan. 28. The Trappers are coming off a 61-53 home win over Central Wyoming on Wednesday, where forward R’Zha Zha’Quire Whittle posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds in 23 minutes.

Whittle, a key player to watch for the Trappers, has been a consistent contributor. In the teams’ first meeting, he scored five points in 13 minutes. Northwest’s recent form has been uneven, with a 3-2 record in its last five games, including an overtime loss at Eastern Wyoming.

Casper (11-14) has found a rhythm, riding a five-game winning streak. The Thunderbirds are coming off an 88-76 road victory at Eastern Wyoming on Wednesday, powered by a double-double from forward Buai Luak, who had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Luak, the Thunderbirds’ player to watch, has been instrumental during the streak, recording three double-doubles in his last seven games. However, he was held to just five points and one rebound in the January loss to Northwest, a performance Casper will look to improve upon at home.

The Thunderbirds’ resurgence has featured strong offensive outputs, scoring at least 82 points in four of the five wins during their streak. Channing Cade (17 points) and Aaron Sievert (18 points) led the scoring in the latest win.

For Northwest, balance has been key. In the January win over Casper, the Trappers had four players score in double figures, led by Nayel Girard’s 16 points. Mateo Trujillo, who scored 13 points in Wednesday’s win, provides backcourt stability.

The contest is a crucial regional matchup as both teams position themselves for the postseason. Casper will aim to leverage its home court and current momentum to avenge its earlier loss, while Northwest looks to solidify its standing and complete the double.
