Mineral Area vs Three Rivers
POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (Interstat) — A tightly contested regional rivalry adds a layer of prestige Saturday when the Three Rivers Raiders host the Mineral Area Cardinals on Reunion/Hall of Fame night.
The men’s junior college basketball matchup at the Libla Family Sports Complex features two teams jockeying for postseason position. Three Rivers (17-8) holds a slight edge in the standings over Mineral Area (15-9), but the Cardinals won the most recent meeting 59-57 on Jan. 31.
That narrow loss in Park Hills, Missouri, is sure to fuel the Raiders, who have split the season series. Three Rivers won the first game 78-65 at home on Jan. 17.
A key matchup will be in the frontcourt, where Three Rivers’ Antonio Williams has been dominant. The forward is coming off a 23-point, 13-rebound performance in a close loss to State Fair on Feb. 14 and has recorded three consecutive double-doubles. In the Jan. 31 loss to Mineral Area, Williams posted 14 points, six rebounds and two blocks.
Mineral Area will counter with guard Lorenzo Shields, who contributed to the January win over the Raiders. Shields is coming off a solid all-around game in a loss to Indian Hills on Feb. 18, where he tallied nine points, five rebounds and four assists in 18 minutes.
Both teams are looking to rebound from recent defeats. The Cardinals are on a two-game skid, including an 87-54 road loss to Indian Hills. The Raiders saw a two-game win streak snapped with a 74-72 defeat at State Fair.
The annual Reunion/Hall of Fame night celebration is expected to draw a large and energized crowd, amplifying the playoff atmosphere for this critical late-season clash.
