Daytona State vs Florida Southwestern State
Preview: Daytona State Falcons at Florida Southwestern State Buccaneers
FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — A pivotal late-season men’s junior college basketball matchup with potential postseason implications is set for Saturday when the Daytona State Falcons visit the Florida Southwestern State Buccaneers.
Both teams enter with nearly identical records and a recent history of tight contests. Daytona State (18-5) holds a slim edge over Florida Southwestern State (17-5) in the standings. The Buccaneers won the first meeting this season, edging the Falcons 98-97 in overtime on Jan. 17 in a game that could foreshadow another close battle.
The Falcons have won three straight since that overtime loss to Eastern Florida State on Feb. 4, including a 79-75 victory over Indian River State on Wednesday. They are led by guard Noah Mendy, who is coming off a 26-point, 6-assist performance in that win. Mendy has been a consistent offensive force, scoring 23 or more points in three of his last four games.
The Buccaneers are also riding momentum from a dominant 95-55 win over Miami Dade on Wednesday. Forward Tyler Bey has been a key contributor, averaging a near double-double in recent weeks. He posted 15 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Polk State on Feb. 7 and had 15 points and 9 rebounds against Miami Dade.
Daytona State’s supporting cast showed its depth against Indian River State, with Adrian Shackleton recording a double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds) and Tyrese Lacey adding 16 points and 6 assists. Florida Southwestern State counters with balance, as evidenced by Mason Blazer’s 18 points and Kenyon Giles’ 14 points and 6 assists in their latest outing.
The game will be a test of Daytona State’s high-scoring offense against a Florida Southwestern State team that has shown both explosive scoring ability and stifling defense, holding its last two opponents to 55 and 51 points.
Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday at Florida SouthWestern State College in Fort Myers.
