Central Wyoming vs Northwest
POWELL, Wyo. (Interstat) — The Northwest College Trappers will seek to even the season series and solidify their winning record when they host the Central Wyoming College Rustlers in a men’s junior college basketball matchup Wednesday night.
The game is a quick rematch of a Jan. 31 contest in Riverton, where the visiting Trappers (11-10) fell 79-69 to the Rustlers (6-13). That result will be fresh in the minds of both teams as they meet at Northwest’s Cabre Gym.
Central Wyoming enters with momentum from a 91-77 home victory over Eastern Wyoming on Saturday. The Rustlers’ offense was fueled by a standout performance from guard Jordan Peel, who scored 21 points and dished out six assists in 40 minutes. Peel, who had 13 points in the first meeting against Northwest, is averaging 15.0 points over his last three full games played.
The Rustlers have struggled on the road this season, however, and will need to replicate their recent offensive efficiency to counter a Northwest team that is 7-3 at home.
The Trappers are coming off an impressive 81-66 win against Gillette, also on Saturday. Forward Nayel Girard led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds. Girard’s production has been a key indicator of success for Northwest; in the team’s 11 wins, he has averaged double-digit scoring, compared to just 3.8 points per game in their 10 losses.
Northwest’s season has been marked by streaks, alternating between wins and losses for much of the conference schedule. A victory would give the Trappers their first two-game winning streak since early January and move them two games above .500.
For Central Wyoming, the challenge will be securing a rare road win and building on the confidence from their earlier victory over Northwest. The Rustlers’ recent games have been tightly contested, with four of their last six decided by five points or fewer or in overtime.
Following this game, Northwest travels to face Casper on Saturday, while Central Wyoming visits Laramie County on Feb. 25.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. MST.
