Kilgore vs Navarro
CORSICANA, Texas (Interstat) — A surging Kilgore College men’s basketball team, ranked among the nation’s top junior college programs, visits a struggling Navarro College squad seeking an upset in a Region XIV Conference matchup Wednesday night.
The Kilgore Rangers (18-3) bring a seven-game winning streak into the contest, having most recently dispatched Paris Junior College 83-70 on Monday. They have established themselves as a defensive force, holding opponents to an average of 62.7 points during their current run. A key figure in their success is guard Antonio Shannon Jr., who is coming off a 15-point, six-rebound performance against Paris and provides consistent scoring and versatility.
The Navarro Bulldogs (10-13) look to halt a three-game skid, each loss by narrow margins. Their most recent outing was a heartbreaking 63-62 loss at Angelina College on Saturday. Guard Shawn Mitchell has emerged as a primary option for Navarro, logging a team-high 16 points, three rebounds and three assists in 38 minutes in that defeat. Navarro’s season has been marked by inconsistency, with a notable 89-70 win over Bossier Parish on Jan. 31 sandwiched between double-digit losses.
The teams met earlier this season on Dec. 10, with Kilgore securing an 83-76 victory at home. The Rangers will aim for a regular-season sweep behind their stifling defense and balanced attack, which features additional contributors like Josh Olutayo and Antoine Shannon.
For Navarro, protecting home court at the Wolens Special Events Center is critical to reviving its postseason hopes. Mitchell’s backcourt play and the support of Jalyn Olson Patterson, who had 11 points and six assists against Angelina, will be pivotal against Kilgore’s pressure.
Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CST. Following this game, Kilgore travels to face Lamar State-Port Arthur on Saturday, while Navarro hits the road to play Lee College.
