Chipola vs Gulf Coast State
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (Interstat) — A critical Panhandle Conference men’s junior college basketball showdown is set for Wednesday when the Gulf Coast State Commodores host the Chipola Indians.
Both teams enter the 7 p.m. tipoff at the Billy Harrison Field House ranked among the nation’s elite, with Gulf Coast State at 18-4 overall and Chipola at 19-6. The Commodores hold a slight edge in the season series, having won both previous meetings. They secured an 81-75 home victory on Jan. 14, then delivered a decisive 87-59 rout at Chipola on Jan. 31.
Gulf Coast State aims to bounce back from a 74-84 road loss to Northwest Florida State on Feb. 11. The Commodores are led by standout guard Trent Lincoln, who is coming off a 40-minute, 24-point performance in that defeat. Over his last five full games, Lincoln has averaged 18 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.8 assists, showcasing his all-around playmaking ability. He was limited to just one minute in the Jan. 31 blowout of Chipola, making his expected full workload Wednesday a key variable.
Chipola arrives with momentum after a 71-59 home win over Pensacola State on Feb. 14. The Indians are paced by forward Hedrens Bartelus, who recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds in that victory. Support comes from Aaron Richard (16 points vs. Pensacola State) and Desmond Kent Jr., who added seven points and eight rebounds.
The Commodores’ recent home dominance, including wins in five of their last six at Panama City, will be tested by a Chipola squad looking to avenge its worst loss of the season. The outcome will significantly impact the conference standings with the regular season winding down.
For Chipola, the game begins a tough final stretch. For Gulf Coast State, it’s a chance to solidify its position before a quick turnaround at Tallahassee State on Saturday.
