Southeastern vs Highland (Ill.)

Preview: Southeastern Blackhawks at Highland (Ill.) Cougars

FREEPORT, Ill. (Interstat) — The Southeastern Blackhawks look to solidify their winning season record Wednesday when they visit the struggling Highland (Ill.) Cougars in a men’s junior college basketball matchup.

Southeastern (13-8) enters on a two-game winning streak at home but is coming off a 72-66 road loss to Indian Hills on Feb. 14. The Blackhawks have dominated the recent series against Highland, winning both meetings this season by an average margin of 18 points, including an 82-55 victory in Freeport on Dec. 13.

A player to watch for the Blackhawks is Khalyn William-Thomas. The guard-forward is coming off a strong performance in the loss to Indian Hills, contributing 14 points and seven rebounds in 26 minutes. His role has fluctuated recently, but he has shown scoring bursts, including a 12-point effort in a win over Triton on Feb. 7.

Highland (8-15) seeks to halt a three-game skid, most recently a 72-64 home loss to Kankakee on Feb. 14. The Cougars have struggled defensively, allowing 90 or more points in three of their last 10 contests.

The Cougars will rely on forward Stevan Jurisic, who turned in a monumental effort against Kankakee. He logged 39 minutes, recording a double-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots. Containing Jurisic in the paint will be a key focus for Southeastern.

Beyond the head-to-head advantage, Southeastern has been more consistent, winning five of its last seven games. Highland has lost eight of its last ten, with its only victories in that span coming against Wilbur Wright and a one-point win over Richard J Daley.

The Blackhawks’ balance will be tested against Jurisic. In their December win over Highland, Southeastern’s defense held the Cougars to 55 points. Replicating that defensive effort will be crucial.

For Highland, finding secondary scoring beyond Jurisic and guard Anthony Washington (15 points vs. Kankakee) is essential to challenge a Southeastern team that has proven to be its superior this season.

Tip-off is set for Wednesday night at Highland Community College.
