Mineral Area vs Indian Hills
OTTUMWA, Iowa (Interstat) — A high-stakes men’s junior college basketball rematch is set for Wednesday when the No. 2-ranked Indian Hills Warriors host the Mineral Area Cardinals at the Hellyer Center.
Indian Hills (21-2), one of the nation’s elite teams, will look to avenge its early-season loss to Mineral Area and protect its home court. The Warriors have been dominant, winning their last five games by an average of 26 points. Their most recent outing was a 72-66 victory over Southeastern on Feb. 14, led by guard KJ LaMonte’s 18 points and seven assists. LaMonte has been a consistent force, scoring in double figures in four consecutive contests.
Mineral Area (15-8) arrives with momentum from the previous head-to-head meeting, a stunning 84-78 home win over then-Indian Hills on Dec. 13. The Cardinals, however, are looking to rebound from a 79-87 road loss to State Fair on Feb. 11. In that defeat, sophomore guard Terron Garrett erupted for a career-high 30 points, adding five rebounds and three assists.
Garrett has been the catalyst for the Cardinals, averaging 17 points over his last five games. His scoring prowess will be essential against a deep and disciplined Indian Hills defense. The Warriors counter with a balanced attack, featuring LaMonte’s playmaking and the interior presence of Xavier Wilson, who posted 10 points, six rebounds and five assists against Southeastern.
The Warriors’ only two losses this season came against top-tier competition: Mineral Area and North Idaho. Wednesday’s game offers a chance for redemption and to solidify their national standing. For Mineral Area, a second victory over Indian Hills would be a signature win, boosting its postseason resume.
The Cardinals must contain Indian Hills’ transition offense and replicate their defensive intensity from December. The Warriors will aim to leverage their home-court advantage and superior record to pressure Mineral Area into mistakes.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Feb. 18.
