Pearl River vs Meridian
Preview: Pearl River Wildcats at Meridian Eagles
MERIDIAN, Miss. (Interstat) — The Meridian Eagles will seek to snap a six-game losing streak when they host the Pearl River Wildcats in a men’s junior college basketball matchup Monday.
The game tips off at 7 p.m. on Feb. 16.
Pearl River (8-10) enters looking to rebound from an 80-56 road loss to Coahoma on Saturday. Prior to that defeat, the Wildcats had won three of their last four games, showcasing improved form. A key to that surge has been the play of guard Christian Gilliland. Over his last six games, Gilliland is averaging 20.2 points, including a 29-point performance in a win over East Mississippi and a 25-point effort in a victory against Copiah-Lincoln.
Meridian (1-13) is coming off a narrow 63-59 overtime loss at Copiah-Lincoln on Thursday. In that contest, forward Derek Byrd Jr. recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Byrd’s activity on the glass will be crucial for the Eagles against a Pearl River team that has shown offensive firepower during its recent wins.
The Eagles’ season has been defined by close defeats, with four of their losses coming by 10 points or fewer. Finding consistent scoring outside of Byrd and guard Ju’Juan Ray, who had 13 points and 7 rebounds in the last outing, remains a persistent challenge.
For Pearl River, consistency is the objective. The Wildcats’ three-game winning streak earlier this month proved their potential, but the lopsided loss to Coahoma highlighted their volatility. Containing Byrd in the paint and leveraging Gilliland’s hot hand will be central to their game plan.
This contest represents a chance for Meridian to secure just its second win of the campaign and build momentum before a road trip to Jones next week. For Pearl River, it is an opportunity to steady itself and climb back toward a .500 record before hosting Jones on Thursday.
The Wildcats won the previous meeting this season, 86-75, on Jan. 10.
