Frank Phillips vs Midland
MIDLAND, Texas (Interstat) — The Midland College Chaparrals used a dominant second-quarter surge to pull away from the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen for a 78-62 victory in a men’s junior college basketball game Monday night.
The game, a rematch of a Jan. 15 contest also won by Midland, was closer than the final score indicated for much of the first half before the Chaparrals’ offensive efficiency and defensive pressure created decisive separation.
Frank Phillips, despite a game-high 25-point performance from Quint Booker, struggled with its shooting throughout. The Plainsmen shot just 31.3 percent from the floor, making 20 of 64 attempts, and connected on only 7 of 25 from three-point range. Their offensive rating of 81.0 points per 100 possessions underscored a night of difficult offensive execution.
Midland, meanwhile, found its rhythm from beyond the arc, hitting 12 of 28 three-point attempts. That perimeter shooting, combined with a 103.9 offensive rating, powered the Chaparrals to their 20th win of the season against four losses. Frank Phillips fell to 7-16.
The most important stretch of the game came in the second quarter, turning a competitive contest into a comfortable Midland lead. After leading 33-25 at the end of the first quarter, the Chaparrals opened the second period with a 12-4 run to establish a 45-29 advantage. The run was fueled by consecutive three-pointers from Brandon White and Cayden Reed, along with active defense that forced several Frank Phillips turnovers.
White, the top star for Midland, was instrumental in that pivotal stretch and finished with 20 points and nine rebounds in just 16 minutes of play. His energy and scoring punch off the bench provided a critical spark. Darius Carr added 18 points for the Chaparrals, including four three-pointers, while Reed contributed 11 points and six assists.
For Frank Phillips, Booker shouldered the offensive load, adding seven rebounds to his 25 points. Jerry Pepin controlled the glass with 14 rebounds, but the Plainsmen could not overcome their 31.3 percent shooting night and 12 turnovers, which Midland converted into key transition opportunities.
The teams were even in total rebounds with 42 apiece, but Midland’s advantages in shooting accuracy, three-point production, and blocks — they swatted eight Frank Phillips shots — proved too much for the visiting Plainsmen to overcome. The Chaparrals also committed 17 fouls to Frank Phillips’ nine, sending the Plainsmen to the line 20 times, but it was not enough to alter the game’s trajectory.
Midland, which entered the game with a 91 percent probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, maintained its position among the region’s top teams with the victory. Frank Phillips will look to regroup as it continues a challenging conference schedule.
