Howard (Tex.) vs New Mexico
HOBBS, N.M. (Interstat) — A high-stakes men’s junior college basketball showdown is set for Thursday when the surging Howard (Texas) Hawks visit the New Mexico Thunderbirds at the Caster Activity Center.
The Hawks (20-3), one of the nation’s top teams, bring a seven-game winning streak to Hobbs. Their last loss was a 65-59 defeat at Odessa on Jan. 22. Howard’s offense has been potent, scoring 80 or more points in five of those seven victories. They previously handled New Mexico 73-55 in Big Spring, Texas, on Jan. 12.
Howard is led by guard Brandon Ivery, who is averaging 16.1 points over his last seven games. He is coming off a 22-point performance in just 25 minutes in a Feb. 9 win over New Mexico Military Institute.
The New Mexico Thunderbirds (15-4), however, have been strong at home and present a formidable challenge. Since the loss to Howard, they have won four of their last five games, including an 83-62 road victory at Western Texas on Feb. 9. In that game, forward Grigorije Avramovic nearly posted a triple-double with 9 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. Avramovic has been a versatile force, averaging 7.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists over his last seven contests.
This matchup features a contrast in recent momentum against home-court advantage. Howard has dominated its conference schedule, but the Thunderbirds will seek revenge and a season-defining win in front of their home crowd. The outcome will have significant implications for the conference standings as the regular season enters its final weeks.
Following this game, Howard will host Western Texas on Feb. 19. New Mexico hits the road to face Clarendon on Feb. 16.
