Cochise vs Yavapai
PRESCOTT, Ariz. (Interstat) — The Cochise Apaches and Yavapai Roughriders meet Wednesday in a men’s junior college basketball rematch with both teams looking to build momentum for the final stretch of the season.
The game tips off at 7:30 p.m. local time at Yavapai College.
Cochise (10-9) enters with a winning record and seeks a regular-season sweep after narrowly defeating Yavapai 83-80 in Douglas on Jan. 24. The Apaches are coming off a high-scoring 95-86 home victory over Central Arizona on Feb. 7, where Jhace Johnson recorded a triple-double with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.
Johnson, a dynamic guard, has been a consistent force for Cochise. Over his last eight games, he is averaging 16.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.4 assists. His playmaking will be central to the Apaches’ attack against a Yavapai team hungry for a win.
Yavapai (5-12) aims to defend its home court and snap a two-game skid following a 69-61 loss at Arizona Western on Feb. 7. The Roughriders showed resilience in a 69-64 win over Central Arizona on Feb. 4, demonstrating they can compete with the region’s better teams.
Forward Rudolfs Svitins is a key player for Yavapai. He posted 17 points and four rebounds in the loss to Arizona Western and nearly had a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds in the first meeting against Cochise. His interior presence will be crucial against Cochise’s athletic lineup.
While Cochise holds the superior record, its season has been marked by volatility, including an 81-55 road loss to Eastern Arizona on Feb. 4. Yavapai has struggled for consistency but has shown flashes, making this a potentially tight contest.
The matchup is the first of two meetings in February between the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference rivals, with a second game scheduled in Prescott on Feb. 28.
