Cape Fear vs USC Salkehatchie
WALTERBORO, S.C. (Interstat) — A pair of Region 10 men’s junior college basketball teams on contrasting trajectories will meet Tuesday when the USC Salkehatchie Indians host the Cape Fear Sea Devils.
The Indians (6-3) enter with a winning record and seek to rebound from a narrow 104-98 road loss to Brunswick on Saturday. That defeat snapped a three-game winning streak that included impressive conference victories over Wake Tech and Richard Bland in January. Salkehatchie’s offense has been potent, averaging over 98 points per game in its last five outings.
Cape Fear (5-6), meanwhile, looks to halt a two-game skid. The Sea Devils are coming off a 97-73 defeat at Brunswick on Thursday, following a 78-68 loss at Wake Tech on Jan. 29. Their season has been marked by inconsistency, with a three-game winning streak in December followed by alternating results in January.
Tuesday’s matchup will feature a contrast in styles. Salkehatchie has shown a high-scoring flair, eclipsing 125 points twice this season, including a 134-127 double-overtime win over Polk State. Cape Fear has demonstrated its own offensive capabilities, scoring 102 points in a win at Denmark Tech, but has also allowed 112 and 97 points in its last two road losses.
Historically, games between these teams have been close. A national statistical simulator projects a dead-even final score of 100-100, suggesting a potential thriller in Walterboro.
The contest is the first of a home-and-home series this month. The teams will meet again at Cape Fear on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
For Salkehatchie, guard play will be key as they look to protect their home court and improve their regional standing. Cape Fear will aim to leverage its size and find defensive answers to steady its season before returning home to face Caldwell Tech on Friday.
Tip-off is set for Tuesday night at Salkehatchie’s home gym.
