Midland vs South Plains

Preview of Midland at South Plains Men’s Basketball

LEVELLAND, Texas (Interstat) — A key men’s junior college basketball rematch with regional implications is set for Monday when the Midland Chaparrals visit the South Plains Texans.

Midland (18-3) enters with the superior record and confidence from a decisive 105-84 home victory over South Plains (16-5) just over a month ago on Jan. 8. The Chaparrals have won three of their last four, including an 83-78 win over Clarendon on Thursday, but suffered a home loss to Howard (Texas) 91-83 on Feb. 2 in that stretch.

South Plains has won two straight since that Howard loss, most recently a 79-67 victory over Odessa on Thursday. The Texans will seek to avenge their January defeat and protect their home court in a matchup that could shuffle the conference hierarchy.

A compelling individual duel will feature Midland guard Yeison Liberato and South Plains forward Antallah Sandlin’el. Liberato is coming off a 14-point, 3-assist performance in 32 minutes against Clarendon. Sandlin’el dominated Odessa with a 27-point, 10-rebound double-double, showcasing the form that makes him one of the region’s most productive frontcourt players.

Midland’s attack is balanced, with Darius Carr and Solomon Ominu also providing significant scoring, as seen in the Clarendon win. South Plains counters with a formidable interior presence; alongside Sandlin’el, Aliou Maiga recorded a 12-point, 13-rebound, 6-block performance last outing, and Zion Pipkin facilitates with 7 assists in that game.

The Chaparrals’ high-powered offense, which has eclipsed 100 points three times this season, will test a Texans defense that has held its last two opponents under 70 points. South Plains must contain Midland’s perimeter game better than in the first meeting, while the Chaparrals need to mitigate Sandlin’el’s inside dominance and second-chance opportunities.

Monday’s result will carry weight for postseason seeding, with both teams entering a crucial final stretch of conference play. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. CST at the Texan Dome.
