Yavapai vs Arizona Western
YUMA, Ariz. (Interstat) — Marsai Mason scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Arizona Western to a 69-61 victory over Yavapai in a men’s junior college basketball game Saturday.
The Matadors, who improved to 15-6 overall, used a decisive second-quarter run to pull away from the Roughriders and complete a regular-season sweep. Arizona Western also won the previous meeting 74-72 on Jan. 21.
The game’s most critical sequence came midway through the second quarter with Arizona Western clinging to a 43-42 lead. The Matadors erupted on a 16-2 run over a four-minute span to seize control. The surge was fueled by defensive pressure, which forced four Yavapai turnovers during the stretch, and efficient scoring from Mario Brunetto and Illiam Fevry. Brunetto hit a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws, while Fevry added a powerful dunk and a layup. When Aaron Barton capped the run with a 3-pointer, Arizona Western held a 58-44 advantage with 8:49 remaining.
Yavapai, which fell to 5-12, could not recover from the deficit despite a game-high 17 points from Rudolfs Svitins. The Roughriders shot just 35.1% from the floor and were hampered by 18 turnovers, which the Matadors converted into multiple transition opportunities.
Arizona Western’s interior presence proved decisive. Alongside Mason’s double-double, which included four blocks, Fevry added 10 points and six rebounds. Matt Anglo contributed 10 points and seven rebounds. The Matadors dominated the boards 41-36 and outscored Yavapai 34-18 in the paint.
Yavapai kept pace early, trading baskets with the Matadors throughout a first quarter that ended tied at 34. Timotey Zoonekynd scored 15 points for the Roughriders, and Alex Pierce added 16 off the bench, but the team’s offensive execution faltered against Arizona Western’s sustained defensive effort in the second period.
The Matadors’ backcourt pressure was key, tallying nine steals. Paora Winitana had four assists and two steals, helping Arizona Western manage the game despite shooting only 4 of 17 from 3-point range and 15 of 26 from the free-throw line.
Arizona Western next plays at Eastern Arizona on Wednesday. Yavapai hosts Cochise on the same night.
