Arizona Western vs Southern Nevada
Preview: Arizona Western Matadors at Southern Nevada Coyotes
LAS VEGAS (Interstat) — The Arizona Western Matadors, riding a wave of offensive firepower, visit the College of Southern Nevada Coyotes in a men’s junior college basketball matchup Wednesday night.
Arizona Western (13-6) enters on a three-game winning streak, averaging 107.6 points per game during that stretch. The Matadors are led by forward Marsai Mason, who is in the midst of a dominant run. Over his last seven games, Mason is averaging 22.6 points and 11.4 rebounds per contest. He posted a 38-point, 19-rebound performance in a win over Central Arizona on Jan. 28 and recorded a double-double (23 points, 10 rebounds) in the team’s most recent victory, a 107-88 rout of Cochise on Saturday.
Southern Nevada (6-8) looks to halt a three-game skid and avenge a 95-76 loss to these same Matadors in Yuma on Jan. 17. In that game, Mason scored 24 points in just 19 minutes for Arizona Western, while Southern Nevada’s Gerald Patterson was held to eight points. Patterson will be a key figure for the Coyotes’ hopes at home. He is coming off a 20-point effort in a 70-59 loss to Yavapai on Saturday and has been a consistent scorer, reaching double figures in five of his last six outings.
The Matadors’ offense presents a significant challenge for the Coyotes. In the January meeting, Arizona Western shot 54% from the field and assisted on 24 of its 36 made baskets. Beyond Mason, Arizona Western has shown balanced scoring, with Paora Winitana and Matt Anglo combining for 36 points in the win over Cochise.
Southern Nevada will need to improve its defensive intensity after allowing opponents to average 85.6 points during its current losing streak. The Coyotes have shown flashes, including an 80-64 win over Yavapai on Jan. 14, where Patterson had 17 points and eight rebounds.
The game is the first of two meetings between the teams in February, with a rematch scheduled in Yuma on Feb. 21. For Southern Nevada, protecting its home court is crucial to reversing its recent fortunes. For Arizona Western, maintaining its high-scoring momentum is key as it pursues a strong position in the conference standings.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST at the Coyotes’ home venue.
