Tallahassee State vs Gulf Coast State
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (Interstat) — A pivotal men’s junior college basketball matchup with postseason implications is set for Wednesday when the Gulf Coast State Commodores host the Tallahassee State Eagles.
Both teams enter with nearly identical sterling records. The visiting Eagles are 15-3, while the home Commodores sit at 16-3. The game is a rematch of a Jan. 17 thriller, which Tallahassee State won 86-78 on its home floor.
That result will likely fuel Gulf Coast State’s quest for revenge at home. In the first meeting, Tallahassee State’s Orion Wilson was dominant, posting 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. The forward is coming off a 15-point, five-rebound performance in a 71-65 win over Pensacola State on Jan. 31.
For Gulf Coast State, guard Aiden Caulker will be a key figure. He contributed 13 points, six rebounds and five assists in the January loss to the Eagles. His playmaking will be crucial against a tough Eagles defense.
Tallahassee State has won two straight, including an 82-69 road victory at Northwest Florida State on Jan. 28. Gulf Coast State is also riding high, coming off a commanding 87-59 road win at Chipola on Jan. 31, though Caulker played only one minute in that blowout.
The matchup features two of the region’s top teams battling for conference supremacy. The Eagles will look to prove their earlier win was no fluke and complete a regular-season road sweep. The Commodores aim to protect their home court and tighten the standings.
The winner will gain a significant mental edge as the teams are scheduled to meet again in Tallahassee on Feb. 21.
Tipoff is Wednesday night at Gulf Coast State’s campus arena in Panama City.
