Coastal Bend vs Lamar State-Port Arthur

PORT ARTHUR, Texas (Interstat) — Two men’s junior college basketball teams seeking to halt slides will meet Wednesday when the Lamar State-Port Arthur Seahawks host the Coastal Bend Cougars at the Carl Parker Center.

Both teams enter with identical 4-11 overall records, though Lamar State-Port Arthur’s official season record is 4-10. The matchup is a quick rematch of a Jan. 14 overtime thriller, which Coastal Bend won 85-81 at home.

The Cougars have lost three straight since that victory, including a narrow 67-65 defeat to Kilgore on Saturday. In that game, forward Matthew Johnson led Coastal Bend with 14 points and nine rebounds. Johnson, a key player to watch, has shown flashes of high production, including a 13-point effort at Kilgore on Jan. 10.

The Seahawks have dropped four consecutive games, most recently a 87-61 loss at Trinity Valley on Saturday. Guard Isaiah Brooks, who scored 17 points with nine rebounds and four assists in the first meeting against Coastal Bend, remains a focal point for Lamar State-Port Arthur. In the teams’ prior matchup, his performance nearly lifted the Seahawks to a road win.

The game will feature two struggling offenses looking to capitalize on defensive vulnerabilities. Coastal Bend’s recent outings include a 38-point performance in a lopsided loss to Trinity Valley, while Lamar State-Port Arthur has failed to reach 70 points in its last three games.

With the season series tied 0-0 after the first meeting’s overtime conclusion, Wednesday’s contest offers a chance for either team to gain a head-to-head advantage and momentum. For Coastal Bend, it’s an opportunity to sweep the regular-season series. For Lamar State-Port Arthur, it’s a shot at redemption on home court.

Tipoff is scheduled for Wednesday night in Port Arthur.
