MIDLAND (Interstat) — Howard (Tex.) built a large first-half lead and withstood a furious Midland rally for a 91-83 victory in a men’s junior college basketball game Monday night.

The Hawks, now 18-3, scored 47 points in the opening quarter and led by 18 at halftime. The Chaparrals, who fell to 17-3, outscored Howard 47-44 after halftime but could not close the gap completely. The result was an upset according to pregame analytics, which favored Midland with nearly a 60 percent probability to win.
