Western Nebraska vs Trinidad State

TRINIDAD, Colo. (Interstat) — Two men’s junior college basketball teams seeking to halt slides will meet Friday when the Trinidad State Trojans host the Western Nebraska Cougars.

The game at Trinidad, Colorado, pits the Trojans (7-11) against the Cougars (4-15). Both teams enter on losing streaks, with Trinidad State dropping its last two games and Western Nebraska mired in a five-game skid after a narrow 87-84 home loss to Southeast on Jan. 17.

Western Nebraska will lean on forward Kellon Harris, who is coming off a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds in that defeat. Harris has been a consistent offensive threat, scoring 26 points against Gillette on Jan. 8 and 30 points in a win over Casper on Jan. 7. Melchi Egbeyemi (13 points, 7 rebounds) and Viktor Lukic-Gavric (11 points) also provided key contributions in the Cougars’ most recent contest.

Trinidad State is looking to rebound from a 121-96 road loss at McCook on Saturday. Kenny Black-Knox is a player to watch for the Trojans; he posted 10 points and nine rebounds in a close loss at North Platte on Jan. 16 and added seven points and five rebounds in an 85-84 win over Laramie County on Jan. 9.

Despite their records, a competitive game is anticipated. The Interstat game simulator projects a dead-even final score of Trinidad State 100, Western Nebraska 100.

This contest opens a key stretch for both teams in Region IX play. Trinidad State will host Northeastern (Colo.) on Saturday, while Western Nebraska travels to face Otero on Saturday. The teams will meet again in a rematch at Western Nebraska on Feb. 4.
