Northeastern (Colo.) vs Otero

Preview: Northeastern (Colo.) Plainsmen at Otero Rattlers

LA JUNTA, Colo. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in fortunes will be on display Friday night when the surging Northeastern (Colo.) Plainsmen visit the struggling Otero Rattlers in a men’s junior college basketball matchup.

The Plainsmen (8-4) enter on a five-game winning streak, including a 93-87 victory over Southeast on Jan. 18. They have shown a knack for close victories, with four wins in that streak coming by four points or fewer or in overtime.

A key catalyst has been guard Dodge Davis, who is coming off a standout performance of 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists in 36 minutes against Southeast. Ethan Carter (25 points) and Quis Davis (17 points) also provided significant offense in that win.

Otero (1-13) has found wins elusive, carrying a four-game losing skid into Friday’s contest. The Rattlers fell 94-69 at North Platte on Jan. 17. Forward Bertran Walthour Jr. has been a bright spot, nearly posting a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds in that loss.

Despite the divergent records, Interstat’s game simulator projects a dead-even final score of 100-100, suggesting potential for a competitive game. The Plainsmen’s momentum will be tested on the road against a Rattlers squad seeking a rare home victory to build confidence.

Northeastern will look to leverage its balanced scoring and experience in tight games. Otero will rely on Walthour Jr.’s interior presence and hope for improved defensive execution to slow a potent Plainsmen attack.

The teams are scheduled to meet again in Sterling on Feb. 4.
