San Jose vs Gavilan
Preview: San Jose Jaguars at Gavilan Rams
GILROY, Calif. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in fortunes will be on display Wednesday night when the surging San Jose City College Jaguars visit the winless Gavilan College Rams in a California Community College men’s basketball matchup.
The Jaguars (11-5) enter on a three-game winning streak, most recently edging Las Positas 71-69 on the road last Saturday. Their offense has been potent, averaging 86 points during the streak, including a 101-point performance against De Anza in December. San Jose has shown resilience with close victories, such as a double-overtime win over Sequoias, but has also endured narrow defeats, including a one-point loss to San Diego City.
Conversely, the Rams (0-15) are mired in a difficult season, seeking their first victory. Their most recent outing was a 90-81 home loss to Columbia on Jan. 2, one of the few games this season decided by single digits. Gavilan has struggled defensively, allowing an average of 92 points per game in its last five contests and suffering several lopsided defeats, including a 102-52 loss to Feather River and a 99-45 loss at Skyline.
Despite the trajectory of the two teams, a statistical anomaly adds intrigue. Interstat’s game simulator projects a highly improbable 100-100 final score, a forecast that contradicts both teams’ season-long trends.
The Jaguars will look to continue their momentum before returning home Friday to face West Valley. Key for San Jose will be maintaining its offensive efficiency against a Gavilan defense that has consistently hemorrhaged points.
For the Rams, the matchup represents a formidable challenge to break their skid. They must find a way to slow a San Jose attack that has scored 80 or more points in eight games this season. Gavilan’s schedule does not get easier, with a trip to Foothill awaiting on Friday.
Wednesday’s game tips off at 7 p.m. PST at Gavilan College.
