Citrus vs Los Angeles Valley

MONARCHS, Calif. (Interstat) — The Citrus College Owls, one of the state’s top men’s junior college basketball teams, delivered a commanding performance on both ends of the floor Wednesday night, overwhelming Los Angeles Valley College 98-68 in a California Community College Athletic Association game.

The most important part of the game was the Owls’ immediate and overwhelming defensive pressure, which created a decisive gap in the first quarter from which the Monarchs never recovered. Citrus forced Los Angeles Valley into 19 turnovers for the game, converting those into easy transition opportunities. The Monarchs’ offensive struggles were encapsulated in a critical early sequence. After taking a brief 2-0 lead on free throws, they committed turnovers on three of their next four possessions. The Owls capitalized, with Leo Ricketts and Rockwell Reynolds hitting jumpers to ignite a run. The Monarchs managed just two field goals in the first five minutes as Citrus built a double-digit lead it would never relinquish.

The Owls, now 13-1 overall, showcased a balanced and efficient attack. Dev Hamilton, coming off a 33-point outing last week, led Citrus with 17 points and nine rebounds. JJ Sanchez added 18 points and six rebounds, while Ricketts scored 20 points. Rockwell Reynolds contributed 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists. The Owls shot 42 percent from the field and outrebounded the Monarchs 50-44.

Los Angeles Valley, which fell to 5-9, was led by Andy Porcayo’s game-high 25 points. Deng Lual provided a bright spot with 16 rebounds and three blocks, but the Monarchs’ offense was stifled, shooting just 36.9 percent from the floor and committing more than three times as many turnovers as assists.

Citrus led 45-34 at halftime and maintained its intensity in the second half, extending its lead throughout. The Owls’ offensive rating of 118.3 on 83 possessions underscored their scoring efficiency, while the Monarchs managed a rating of just 84.4.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again on Jan. 31 in Glendora. Citrus will host Antelope Valley on Saturday, while Los Angeles Valley travels to face Santa Monica.
