Santa Barbara vs Moorpark

Preview: Santa Barbara Vaqueros at Moorpark Raiders

MOORPARK, Calif. (Interstat) — Two men’s junior college basketball teams with identical aspirations and nearly identical records will meet Wednesday night when the Santa Barbara Vaqueros visit the Moorpark Raiders.

Both teams enter the California Community College Athletic Association contest at 8-6 overall, seeking momentum as conference play intensifies. The matchup promises a clash of strengths, with Santa Barbara looking to snap a two-game skid and Moorpark aiming to rebound from a road loss.

The Vaqueros are led by forward James Reach, who has been a consistent performer. Reach is coming off a 13-point, 8-rebound effort in an 87-80 home loss to Orange Coast on Dec. 30. In his last five games, he is averaging 13.8 points and 4.4 rebounds, including a 19-point outing at Canyons. Support comes from guard Brycen Matthews, who scored 15 points in the most recent defeat.

Moorpark counters with high-scoring guard Eric Kubel, who is capable of offensive explosions. Kubel poured in 33 points on 12-of-18 shooting, including 7-of-10 from 3-point range, in a 98-88 win over Fresno City on Dec. 30. However, the Raiders are looking to bounce back from a 79-63 defeat at West Valley last Saturday.

Santa Barbara’s recent form shows vulnerability, having lost three of its last four. Moorpark had won three straight before the West Valley game, showcasing a potent offense that averaged 82.3 points during that win streak.

The Vaqueros will continue a three-game road trip at Oxnard on Saturday. Moorpark opens a stretch of three out of four games at home, hosting Ventura on Saturday.

Wednesday’s winner will gain an early edge in the standings and valuable confidence. The teams will meet again in Santa Barbara on Jan. 31.
