Santiago Canyon vs Santa Ana
SANTA ANA, Calif. (Interstat) — An undefeated record will be on the line Wednesday when the Santa Ana College Dons host the Santiago Canyon Hawks in a California community college men’s basketball showdown.
The Dons (13-0), one of the state’s remaining unbeaten teams, will face their toughest test in weeks against a Hawks squad (9-3) boasting a potent offense. The game tips off at 7 p.m. on Jan. 7.
Santa Ana is powered by sophomore guard Aaron De Santiago, who is coming off a career performance. In Friday’s 91-85 win over Los Angeles Trade Tech, De Santiago poured in 33 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished two assists in 33 minutes. He has scored 20 or more points in three of his last four outings, establishing himself as the focal point of the Dons’ attack.
Santiago Canyon enters with momentum from a 75-70 road victory at Los Angeles Harbor on Dec. 19. In that win, the Hawks displayed balanced scoring with Jacob De Armas (14 points, 5 assists), Salim Semaan (11 points, 10 rebounds) and Ryan Weber (13 points, 8 rebounds) all making key contributions. The Hawks average 81.2 points per game and have topped 90 points four times this season.
The Dons’ defense, however, has been stifling, holding opponents to an average of 64.2 points during their perfect start. Their closest contest was the six-point win over Trade Tech; their average margin of victory is 22.5 points.
This matchup begins a critical stretch for both teams in conference play. The Hawks will look to hand Santa Ana its first loss and prove they belong among the state’s elite. For the Dons, the mission is to protect their pristine record and defend their home court against a dangerous, high-scoring rival.
The teams are scheduled to meet again in two weeks on Jan. 30 at Santiago Canyon.
