Coalinga vs Sequoias

VISALIA, Calif. (Interstat) — The Sequoias Giants turned a dominant defensive performance into a runaway victory, overwhelming the visiting Coalinga Falcons 97-59 in a California Community College Athletic Association men’s basketball game Wednesday night.

The game was effectively decided by a relentless first-half onslaught from the Giants, who capitalized on a staggering discrepancy in ball security and effort. Sequoias forced 22 Coalinga turnovers, converting them into a series of transition baskets that fueled their offense. The Giants also controlled the glass completely, outrebounding the Falcons 56-34, including a 20-4 advantage on the offensive boards that led to numerous second-chance points.

While the final score reflected a comprehensive victory, the most important part of the game was a decisive second-quarter surge that turned a competitive contest into a blowout. Leading 40-31 after the first quarter, the Giants opened the second period with a 16-3 run, highlighted by consecutive steals and dunks from Mason Dorsey and Jamaal Phatty. This stretch typified the night, as Sequoias’ defensive pressure smothered Coalinga’s offensive sets and created easy scoring opportunities at the other end. The Falcons managed just 28 points in the second half as the Giants continued to extend their lead.

Mason Dorsey led the Giants with a versatile stat line of 15 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, but his impact was most felt through his game-high five steals, which spearheaded the defensive effort. Javon Bragg provided a game-high 20 points off the bench for Sequoias. Cameron Kelly added 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Jayden Abuyen contributed 15 points and five steals.

Kristian Graham led all scorers with 21 points for Coalinga, which fell to 2-13 on the season. Ryan Gomwalk added 14 points for the Falcons.

The Giants, who improved to 10-5, showcased a level of defensive intensity that had been missing in recent close losses to Citrus and Ventura. Their ability to generate 18 steals and limit their own turnovers to eight proved the foundation for the lopsided win.

Sequoias shot 42.4% from the field and held Coalinga to 37.3% shooting. The Giants also attempted 10 more free throws, making 17, compared to just six makes on 13 attempts for the Falcons.

The victory gives Sequoias momentum as it prepares to face Reedley on the road Saturday. Coalinga looks to rebound at Fresno City, also on Saturday.
