Eastern Arizona vs Cochise

DOUGLAS, Ariz. (Interstat) — A surging Eastern Arizona men’s basketball team will look to extend its win streak when it visits Cochise College in a junior college matchup Saturday.

The Gila Monsters (10-7) have won three straight, most recently a 101-78 rout of Central Arizona on Wednesday. The Apaches (6-7), meanwhile, seek to halt a three-game skid on their home floor.

Eastern Arizona’s recent success has been fueled by guard Brad Ballinger. In the win over Central Arizona, he posted 19 points and nine assists in 32 minutes. Over his last two full games, he is averaging 13 points and 5.5 assists.

Cochise will counter with forward Teron Murray, who has been a consistent bright spot during the losing streak. He is averaging 17 points and 7.3 rebounds over the last three contests, including a 22-point, seven-rebound effort in the loss to Arizona Western.

The Gila Monsters’ offense has found its rhythm, scoring over 100 points twice in the last five games. Alongside Ballinger, Ryan Hunt notched a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Kahu Treacher added 16 points in Wednesday’s victory.

Cochise has struggled defensively, allowing an average of 85.6 points during its three consecutive losses. The Apaches will need a strong performance from Naeem Colston, who pulled down 15 rebounds against Arizona Western, and Jhace Johnson, who scored 20 points in that game.

This game marks the first of two regular-season meetings between the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference rivals. They will meet again in Thatcher on Feb. 4 and conclude the season series back in Douglas on Feb. 21.

Saturday’s contest tips off at 4 p.m. MST at Cochise College in Douglas.
