Preview: Garden City at Coffeyville in Key NJCAA Matchup

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. (Interstat) — A pivotal men’s junior college basketball matchup between two teams with identical overall win totals will unfold Saturday when the Garden City Broncbusters visit the Coffeyville Ravens.

Both teams enter the Jan. 17 contest with 10 wins, though Coffeyville (10-4) holds a slight edge in winning percentage over Garden City (10-6). The game features a contrast in recent momentum.

The Broncbusters are coming off a dominant 122-71 home victory over Colby on Wednesday. In that win, Xavier Johnson scored 20 points in just 19 minutes, while Zaire Lott added 20 points and eight rebounds. However, Garden City had dropped its two previous games, a narrow 87-85 loss to Cloud County and a 92-83 defeat at Dodge City.

Coffeyville last played on Jan. 10, securing an 87-80 overtime road win at Pratt. Ulysses Webb powered that victory with a season-high 27 points and nine rebounds. The Ravens’ only loss in their last five games was a 93-77 setback at Hutchinson on Jan. 7.

Johnson, a key player to watch for Garden City, has shown explosive scoring ability, posting 20-point games in two of his last four outings. For Coffeyville, Webb’s performance is often a bellwether; the Ravens are 8-1 this season when he scores eight or more points.

The Ravens have been strong at home, boasting a 5-1 record in Coffeyville this season. Garden City has a 3-3 mark in true road games.

Following this contest, Garden City will host Hutchinson on Jan. 21. Coffeyville hits the road for its next game, facing Butler (Kan.) on Jan. 21.
