Trinity Valley vs Lamar State-Port Arthur
PORT ARTHUR, Texas (Interstat) — A surging Trinity Valley men’s basketball team, ranked among the nation’s top junior college programs, visits Lamar State-Port Arthur on Saturday in a matchup of teams at opposite ends of the conference standings.
The Cardinals (14-2) enter on a three-game winning streak, most recently defeating Navarro 75-66 on Wednesday behind 20 points, five rebounds and five assists from standout guard M.J. Wardlow. Zati Loubaki added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.
Wardlow has been a consistent force for Trinity Valley, averaging 13.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists over his last four contests. The Cardinals’ only loss since November came against Blinn on Jan. 10.
Lamar State-Port Arthur (3-7) looks to rebound from a tough 85-81 overtime road loss to Coastal Bend on Wednesday. The Seahawks’ season has been highlighted by a 90-81 home win over Bossier Parish on Jan. 10, where forward Martins Adonry delivered a dominant 17-point, 17-rebound performance.
Adonry has shown flashes of elite rebounding, posting a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Navarro on Jan. 3. Containing him on the glass will be a key focus for a Trinity Valley frontcourt that features Loubaki and Derelle Desire, who had eight points, 10 rebounds and two blocks against Navarro.
The game tips off at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Lamar State-Port Arthur campus. It is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams, with the rematch scheduled for Jan. 31 in Athens.
Trinity Valley will aim to continue its push for a regional title, while the Seahawks seek a statement victory to turn around their season.
